My setup also has 4GB, but the SessionImageSize of 20 is fine. It's likely your second guess, that you are running multiple video cards. Incidentally, raising the sessionimagesize also fixes problems with models becoming grey and the game crashing after alt-tabing on games like hl2 and counter-strike source.
